Project overview
Through practical collaboration between students and industry, Team UOW in the Solar Decathlon 2018 endeavour to change the way the world views sustainable housing by building a home that is architecturally inspiring, innovative and adaptive to a person’s needs as they continue to age, creating ‘A House For Life’. The net-zero energy and dementia friendly house was designed and built in Australia by students, then disassembled and reassembled in Dubai in less than 14 days. The house was toured by the Price of Dubai and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. The house was awarded overall 2nd place along with 8 other awards.
My contribution
For almost two years I volunteered and participated in the Solar Decathlon Dubai – an international sustainable house building competition – as a photographer and graphic designer for Team UOW’s Desert Rose House. I shot, edited and retouched photos and helped to create and illustrate an award winning safety campaign as well as designing graphics, posters, pamphlets, illustrations and infographics.

I lead the design and creation of a seed paper pamphlet that was made from sustainable materials, including the ink. The pamphlet could be taken home by visitors and planted, resulting in the growth of local United Arab Emirates wildflowers. This reflected both the team’s attitude towards sustainability, and the spirit of the Solar Decathlon. I illustrated a wallpaper graphic for the radiant cooling panels that both reflected the cooling nature of the panels as well as taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape and Middle Eastern patterns. I also filmed and edited a time-lapse of the build and disassembly.
